What Instagram wants

Instagram accepts MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. If your clip is in another format — MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI — or uses a codec Instagram dislikes, uploads can fail, look soft, or get heavily re-compressed. The Instagram preset converts to a clean H.264 MP4 automatically, which avoids all of that.

The right size for each placement

  • Reels & Stories — vertical 9:16, 1080 × 1920.
  • Feed (portrait) — 4:5, 1080 × 1350.
  • Feed (square) — 1:1, 1080 × 1080.
  • Feed (landscape) — 16:9, 1080 × 608.

Just add the right resize

The preset handles format and quality — H.264 MP4 at Balanced — so the only thing left to choose is size. Use the resize option to match your placement: 1080 × 1920 for Reels and Stories, or one of the feed sizes above. Instagram maxes out at 1080p, so there's no benefit to uploading 4K — resizing down also keeps the file smaller and the upload quicker.

Nothing is uploaded to us

The conversion runs locally in your browser. H.264 from common formats like MP4 or MOV can use your browser's built-in encoder, which is usually hardware-accelerated; less common sources fall back to a WebAssembly build of ffmpeg. Either way, the actual conversion is your device's work, not ours — we just supply the code — and your video only goes to Instagram when you post it. It never passes through our servers, staying 100% private until you choose to share it.

Frequently asked questions

What settings does the Instagram preset use?
Clicking "Convert for Instagram" opens the converter with MP4 (H.264) video and the Balanced quality preset already applied — the format Instagram wants, at a quality setting that holds up well after Instagram's own re-compression. Just add your resize target and convert.
What video format does Instagram use?
Instagram uses MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. Converting your clip to a clean H.264 MP4 first — which is exactly what the Instagram preset does — is the most reliable way to get it to upload without errors or heavy re-compression.
What size should an Instagram video be?
Reels and Stories are vertical 9:16 (1080 × 1920). Feed videos can be portrait 4:5 (1080 × 1350), square 1:1 (1080 × 1080), or landscape 16:9 (1080 × 608). Instagram caps quality at 1080p, so uploading anything larger doesn't gain you anything.
Why does my video fail to upload to Instagram?
Usually because it's in an unsupported format or codec, or the resolution and aspect ratio are off. Converting to H.264 MP4 — which the Instagram preset does automatically — and resizing to the correct dimensions for your placement fixes most upload problems.
Is my video private?
Yes. Conversion runs in your browser — often using your device's own hardware-accelerated encoder for H.264, with a WebAssembly fallback when needed. Your video is never uploaded to us; it only reaches Instagram when you choose to post it, exactly as if you'd uploaded it directly.
